H.J. Baker’s reputation for dependability and quality was built on a strong foundation from the beginning. It is continued today as H.J. Baker focuses on the five pillars of good corporate social responsibility: sustainability, community, education, diversity, and innovation. Thinking about resources differently was born early at H.J. Baker. Pomace, a by-product of making castor oil, one of H.J. Baker’s first products, was transformed into the first fertilizer product offered by H.J. Baker. This began a way of rethinking that is now a part of the foundation of the company: looking at products and by-products from a different perspective. Another by-product, sulphur, became an integral part of H.J. Baker when, in the early 1900’s, we were involved with Dr. Herman Frasch in the development of a sulphur extraction process.
Today, H.J. Baker owns and operates two sulphur processing, storage and export facilities in California. Because sulphur is a by-product of refining oil, both facilities were originally built in response to the oil industry’s effort to produce cleaner fuels and their desire to engage specialized companies to handle the by-product in an environmentally responsible way. H.J. Baker converts sulphur, left over from the refinery process, into a non-leachable, slow release, long lasting fertilizers, for the benefit of agriculture and to help feed a rapidly increasing population. In addition, we convert sulphur into formed sulphur that our customers use to make sulphuric acid. Over half of this sulphuric acid is used to make phosphate fertilizers.

High Impact products are More Efficient products. To sustain a population of 9 billion people by 2050, the industry will need products that do more with less. Efficiency and productivity are vital to minimize the overuse of limited resources in both animal nutrition and crop nutrients. H.J. Baker products improve the quantity and quality of food by applying precision technology: feed and fertilizer tailored for specific uses.

SUSTAINABILITY increasing food supplies
Our once SULPHUR-RICH soils are now short of sulphur due, in large part, to emission reducing technologies. Research indicates that deficiencies in sulphur, not only reduces yields, but adversely affects quality.
H.J. Baker converts molten sulphur, left over from the refinery process, into fertilizers. The benefits of these fertilizers are broad and include increased resistance to leaching, soil amending properties that improve water penetration and enhance soluble calcium availability, and a reduction of conventional fertilizer usage.

Certified by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI), we are proud to offer a diverse group of OMRI certified fertilizers to serve today’s market including our sulphur fertilizers and our micronutrient enhanced sulphur fertilizers with iron, zinc, manganese, and copper.

The safe handling of products is a top priority to our company. We invest significantly in operations safety and training our employees in safety protocol. With more than 24 years of safety expertise handling sulphur, H.J. Baker’s staff is extremely qualified in safety protocols.
We are committed to sharing this expertise with our customers.
An effective safety program reduces injuries, property damage, improves morale and saves money. It also avoids penalties, business interruptions, injury to reputation; and reduces workers compensation exposure.
H.J. Baker has created a Sulphur Safety section of its website dedicated to training. With it anyone can train staff on the safe use and handling of sulphur and sulphur based products. The training section also has a sulphur safety quiz, answers section, and safety certificate. Our sulphur safety training webinar is available on the website as well.

We are very pleased to partner with Chemical Initiatives in Africa to create a sulphur facility in Umbogintwini, Africa. Chemical Initiatives has an excellent reputation, advanced manufacturing expertise, and sustainable practices foundation. This TIGER-SUL pastillation facility supplies the African continent with the much needed sulphur for improved crop yields and quality. CHINA and Brazil are also home to partnerships and manufacturing facilities that help us innovate globally.
H.J. Baker’s newest facility Irricana, Canada is an enhanced Research & Development facility with test-plots on site that demonstrate first-hand how products improve crop health and increase yield. Irricana is a facility that showcases our commitment to Agriculture retailers and growers.

H.J. Baker’s Formulation technology ensures consistent feed nutrients by accurately measuring specific amino acids for digestibility and use by the bird. Every formula can be adjusted for our customers to ensure that the precise delivery of amino acids is exceptionally reliable. This precision technology avoids deficiencies in amino acid availability and delivers feed efficiency through measurable profiles. This attention to specific formulations extends across our entire line of feed ingredient products.

Taking steps to reduce risks are at the core of AFIA’s Safe Feed/Safe Food initiative and all of H.J. Baker’s feed manufacturing plants are certified.

INNOVATIVE PRECISE EFFICIENT
Successful dairy farmers already know overfeeding crude protein wastes resources because high-producing dairy cows need the amino acids in protein, not crude protein.
Balancing for amino acids in dairy herds delivers more milk and improved milk component quality using less crude protein. It has other sustainability benefits including:
